Light Reactive Doodles with Jai’la Anderson | Elements of Nature

Elements of Nature is a collaborative arts project by Left Bank, bringing together early-career artists, local communities, and the natural environment. Inspired by 12 natural elements—Earth, Water, Light, Shadow, Time, and more—artists and participants co-create new artworks through workshops, outdoor exploration, and creative experimentation. The final works will be showcased in a public exhibition at Left Bank Leeds in November 2025.

This project is funded by Leeds Inspired & Leeds City Council as part of their Grow development program.

Meet the Artist: Jai’la Anderson

Jai’la is a 19-year-old artist from Birmingham, currently living in Leeds and beginning her second year at Leeds Arts University, where she is studying Fine Art BA. Although she primarily worked as a painter in the past, she has recently branched out into sculptural work, creating installations that investigate the relationship between art and emotions. In her most recent semester, she explored the calming effects of colours using LED lighting and hopes to continue this research as she enters her second year of study.

Element: Light
Project Focus: Jai’la’s project explores how colour and light can affect our emotions. Through playful painting sessions and colour-changing light displays, she invites participants to slow down, enjoy the creative process, and create something beautiful together.

Workshop: Colour Changing Doodles

Join Jai’la for a meditative, playful workshop where we’ll explore the stress-relieving qualities of art-making. Over two hours, participants will create colourful, patterned paintings, then watch them transform under shifting coloured lights.

Workshop Flow:

  • Introduction & Warm-Up – Jai’la introduces meditative pattern-making and gouache painting techniques, encouraging participants to let go of perfectionism and enjoy the process.
  • First Painting Session – Create your first set of colourful patterns while relaxing to music. Experiment with lines, brushes, paper sizes, and colours.
  • Collaborative Artwork & Exhibition Prep – Choose to contribute your patterns to a large, collective piece that will be displayed under colour-changing lights at the final exhibition, or continue working on your own creations.
  • Light Reveal & Sharing – See your paintings projected under different coloured lights, watch them transform, and reflect on the experience together.

Participants will take home their own painted works and leave with tools to continue using creative expression as a calming, reflective practice.

Date & Time: Jai’la will host three repeating sessions - please see dates and times by clicking get tickets!
Location: Left Bank Leeds
